No Pure Capillary Solitary Waves Exist in 2D Finite Depth

چکیده
We prove that the 2D finite depth capillary water wave equations admit no solitary solutions. This closes existence/non-existence problem for waves in 2D, under classical assumptions of incompressibility and irrotationality, with physical parameters being gravity, surface tension fluid depth.

Fully nonlinear gravity-capillary solitary waves in a two-fluid system of finite depth
Large-amplitude waves at the interface between two laminar immisible inviscid streams of different densities and velocites, bounded together in a straight infinite channel are studied, when surface tension and gravity are both present. A long-wave approximation is used to develop a theory for fully nonlinear interfacial waves allowing amplitudes as large as the channel thickness. The result is ...
متن کاملFinite-wavelength stability of capillary-gravity solitary waves
We consider the Euler equations describing nonlinear waves on the free surface of a twodimensional inviscid, irrotational fluid layer of finite depth. For large surface tension, Bond number larger than 1=3, and Froude number close to 1, the system possesses a one-parameter family of small-amplitude, traveling solitary wave solutions. We show that these solitary waves are spectrally stable with ...
متن کاملThree-dimensional Solitary Gravity-capillary Water Waves
The existence of solitary-wave solutions to the three-dimensional water-wave problem with strong surface-tension effects is predicted by the KP-I model equation. The term solitary wave describes any solution which has a pulse-like profile in its direction of propagation, and the KP-I equation admits explicit solutions for three different types of solitary wave. A line solitary wave is spatially...

متن کاملTransversally periodic solitary gravity-capillary waves.
When both gravity and surface tension effects are present, surface solitary water waves are known to exist in both two- and three-dimensional infinitely deep fluids. We describe here solutions bridging these two cases: travelling waves which are localized in the propagation direction and periodic in the transverse direction. These transversally periodic gravity-capillary solitary waves are foun...
